Open Gaming at Mechani-Kon 2

Well I had a fun day of gaming at Mechani-Kon 2 this Saturday September 18th. While it is primarily a Warhammer 40K gaming tournament, there is a small contingent of other gaming that goes on as well.

My part in the convention is in the boardgame department. This time around we had a number of different games available to play. The main games that ended up being played were Smallworld, Pandemic and Descent. Other games available were Warrior Knights, Portable Galactic Empire, Family Business and Guillotine. Unfortunately due to time constraints we unable to play all the games, but we did enjoy those that we did play.

For Smallworld, a simplified cross between Civilization and Risk without the use of dice, we played a 3-player game that included the two character expansions (we decided not to use the Card expansion). I am finding that it is becoming one of the more popular games to play when you want something fairly fast paced and simple to intoduce to new players. I managed to pull out a sweet victory using Pillaging Skeletons for my first 8 turns. I ended with 114 points while the two victims had scores in the high 70's and low 80's.

After Smallworld we went on to two games of Pandemic on the Brink, The first we managed to pull out an easy victory, while on the second we realized a turn to late the moves we should have made to be able to win and lost due to having gone through the deck.

From there we went on to Descent using all of its expansions. For it we were testing out a dungeon that I created to see if it will work well at PrairieCon XXXII where I am hoping to run it in a tournament.
