Prodigal Gamers Needing Help

Hey all, Doc here.

There's 2 gamers in the Manioba Interlake region looking to find an RPG group or an RPG game night to join. I believe they're willing to travel to Winnipeg or an equal distance in other directions to play.

Reply to this post to suggest game days at local gaming shops. If you run a game yourself and have a couple of open spots but don't want to publicly post your e-mail address, click on one of the contact links to e-mail me and/or Scipio with the details and we'll get you in contact with them.

Let's show the gamer spirit and help these guys find a game! :)

D&D Red Box

Scipio, Dan and I played the original D&D Red Box, Dungeons and Dragons: Basic Set, last Saturday. I don't want to duplicate effort, so here's the link to the article on Doc's Box: http://sharedweave.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-first-love-dungeons-and-dragons.html

Open Gaming at Mechani-Kon 2

Well I had a fun day of gaming at Mechani-Kon 2 this Saturday September 18th. While it is primarily a Warhammer 40K gaming tournament, there is a small contingent of other gaming that goes on as well.

My part in the convention is in the boardgame department. This time around we had a number of different games available to play. The main games that ended up being played were Smallworld, Pandemic and Descent. Other games available were Warrior Knights, Portable Galactic Empire, Family Business and Guillotine. Unfortunately due to time constraints we unable to play all the games, but we did enjoy those that we did play.

For Smallworld, a simplified cross between Civilization and Risk without the use of dice, we played a 3-player game that included the two character expansions (we decided not to use the Card expansion). I am finding that it is becoming one of the more popular games to play when you want something fairly fast paced and simple to intoduce to new players. I managed to pull out a sweet victory using Pillaging Skeletons for my first 8 turns. I ended with 114 points while the two victims had scores in the high 70's and low 80's.

After Smallworld we went on to two games of Pandemic on the Brink, The first we managed to pull out an easy victory, while on the second we realized a turn to late the moves we should have made to be able to win and lost due to having gone through the deck.

From there we went on to Descent using all of its expansions. For it we were testing out a dungeon that I created to see if it will work well at PrairieCon XXXII where I am hoping to run it in a tournament.

Pandemic, the Boardgame

So there I am sitting in one of our local gaming stores on a Tuesday night looking for a pick up game of whatever someone wants to play. After awhile I have finally got 2 otheer players interested in playing something. We check out the available games and spot everybody's favourite plague and pestilence cooperative game: PANDEMIC.

"This is a good fun and challenging game," I tell the fresh faced innoccents who have decided to try it. "The worst I have ever done in the game is be dead by the first player's second turn (5 turns). As long as nothing epically bad happens we should last at least 20 minutes maybe 25."
......
NEVER I repeat NEVER!!!!! say something like this while playing Pandemic. This brought about my new record for fastest game played as we proceeded to die horribly by the 3rd turn.

My overall record now for Pandemic and it's expansion On The Brink is now 8-17. One of those victories I must say with some pride was with 7 Epidemic cards laced through the deck.

If you ever get the chance to play, DO it is worth the time and you will be hooked.
